Can diesel generators run safely on rainy days?

Heavy rainfall is usual in tropical regions and other areas. A stable electricity supply is crucial in bad weather, but is it safe to run a diesel generator on rainy days?

Our enclosure type diesel generators are safely designed to equip with both weatherproof and soundproof functions. Under normal usage, raindrops cannot get into the internal parts like fuel, lubricating and cooling systems. Additionally, all of our containerised sets have water outlets at the bottom of air outlets to remove water. However, do not run a genset in extreme conditions, for example, locating a genset under a drain spout or during a flood.

We should never operate an openset under the rain, as this type is for locating in a generator room. Water can cause permanent damage to a generator. Moisture can ruin the alternator and other internal components that may lead to corrosion. Once there is damage to the generator, you need an overhaul to remove dirt and clean the internal components afterwards.

We had similar projects to build customised rainproof housing for clients having a strong demand for water resistance. If you have special requests for your diesel generator designs, feel free to consult our specialists!

Radiator coolant of a diesel generator: Rust preventive & Antifreeze Coolant

Radiator coolant of a diesel generator: Rust preventive & Antifreeze Coolant

When the generator set runs, the diesel engine pumps coolant to the radiator to bring away heat generated by the engine. There are two main types of coolants, where the coolant fluids are composed of purified water and rust preventive or antifreeze:

  1. Rust preventive: an anti-rust liquid to prevent corrosion in most conditions.
  2. Antifreeze: in addition to the anti-rust property, an antifreeze is for operation under cold weather conditions. It prevents water from freezing which may damage the internal components.

For Cummins diesel generators, Fleetguard coolants are a convenient choice to ensure the coolant circulates effectively. There is no need to add water when using Fleetguard coolants. There are other alternatives, but you may have to mix the liquids in different ratios according to specific temperature requirements.

Why do we use 2 pack paint for our containerised sets?

Why do we use 2 pack paint for our containerised sets?

2 Pack Paint, also known as 2 Pack or 2-pac, is an acrylic enamel paint in the spray painting industry. 2 Pack Paint produces high-gloss, smooth, durable, and luxurious finishes based on polyurethane for exposed surfaces. It does not peel and maintain vibrant colour without becoming dull. Due to its weatherproof nature, 2 Pack Paint is more resistant to damage and is commonly used in the automotive industry.

Due to its superior quality to alternative painting techniques, we utilise 2 pack paint in containerised and canopy sets of our diesel generators. You may choose from a huge range of RAL colours for the colour of your power box. The RAL Classic colours have a 4-digit structure, and the first digit is a system code number (1: yellow, 2: orange, 3: red, 4: violet, 5: blue, 6: green, 7: grey, 8: brown, and 9: white and black). The remaining digits are sequentially arranged.

Emergency stops in diesel generator sets

Mechanical & electronic emergency stops in containerised diesel generator sets

Normally, a cool-down process is required for a shutdown of the diesel generator sets. In case of an emergency – such as fire, gas leak etc – the emergency stops are useful to bypass time delay to cut off the supply of fuel directly. So that an absence of fuel prevents the diesel generator from operating. There are mainly 2 types of emergency stops: Electronic & Mechanical.

  • Electronic: when pressing the electronic emergency stop button, the control panel will send signals to halt the fuel pump operation safely.
  • Mechanical: when pulling the handle of the mechanical emergency stop to full extend, a conduit attached (with a wire within) will close the opening mounted on the fuel pump.

Our containerised diesel generator sets are equipped with electronic emergency stops. For local projects in Hong Kong, an extra mechanical emergency stop is often installed to provide additional protection to meet fire safety requirements. If you need to perform an emergency shutdown operation, attempt the electronic emergency stop before using a mechanical emergency stop. After using the emergency stops, the stop devices have to be restored before restarting the generator set.
